King Nebuchadnezzar and the Tree

"The tree grew large and strong and its top touched the sky;
it was visible to the ends of the earth.
Its leaves were beautiful, its fruit abundant, and on it was food for all.
Under it the beasts of the field found shelter,
and the birds of the air lived in its branches; from it every creature was fed."
The Old Testament, the interpretation of King Nebuchadnezzar's dream of a tree by the great Prophet Daniel, Chapter 4, verses 11 to 12.

Blossoms in Spring in Ireland

       An Irish Blessing
May the blessing of Light be on you -
light without and light within,
May the blessed sunlight shine on you
and warm your heart till it glows like
a great peat fire, so that the stranger
may come and warm himself at it, and
also a friend.
And may the light shine out of the two
eyes of you, like a candle set in two
windows of a house, bidding the wanderer
to come in out of the storm.

And may the blessing of the Rain be on you -
the soft sweet rain. May it fall upon your
spirit so that all the little flowers may
spring up, and shed their sweetness on the air.
And may the blessing of the Great Rains be on
you, may they beat upon your spirit and wash
it fair and clean, and leave there many a
shining pool where the blue of heaven shines,
and sometimes a star.

And may the blessing of the Earth be on you -
the great round earth; may you ever have a
kindly greeting for them you pass as you're
going along the roads.
May the earth be soft under you when you
rest upon it, tired at the end of the day, and may
it rest easy over you when, at the last, you lay
out under it;
May it rest so lightly over you, that your soul
may be out from under it quickly, and up, and
off, and on its way to God.

God gave every green plant for food...

'Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground - everything that has the breath of life in it - I give every green plant for food." And it was so.
God saw all that He had made, and it was very good.'
The Book of Genesis Chapter 1, verses 29 to 31

The spirituality behind foods from the fields;

GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOODS
Genetically modified foods or biotech foods are foods derived from genetically modified organisms (GMO). Genetically modified organisms have had specific changes introduced into their DNA by genetic engineering techniques.

BT TOXINS AND UNIVERSITY OF SHERBROOKE HOSPITAL CENTRE
Concerns have been raised by a study carried out by independent doctors at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of Sherbrooke Hospital Centre in Quebec, Canada, according to a report written by Sean Poulter (1).  According to the article, blood samples were taken from 30 pregnant women and 39 other women who were not having a baby. The doctors were looking for residues of pesticides associated with the cultivation of GM food. These included the so-called Bt toxins, which are implanted using GM techniques into corn and some other crops.

The results of the study are reported to have found traces of Bt toxin in the blood of 93 % of the pregnant mothers. It was also found in 80% of the umbilical cords.

In the non-pregnant group, traces were found in the blood of 69%. According to the report, it is thought the toxin is entering the human body resultant to eating milk, meat and eggs from farm livestock fed GM corn.   Poulter reports that the Canadian team told the scientific journal Reproductive Toxicology that the Bt toxin was clearly detectable and appears to cross the placenta to the foetus.

STUDY ON BEES BY JOHN MCDONALD IN PENNSYLVANIA
According to a report written by Patty Donovan (2), John McDonald, a beekeeper with a background in biology believes it may be possible that Cry1Ab may have an immuno-suppressive effect on bees, acting as a slow killer.

A STUDY ON BEES IN MEXICO
Donovan further tells us in the report that a study indicating that Bt may be contributing to the death of honey bees was undertaken in Mexico. The result showed that, when exposed to higher concentration of Cry1Ab in the study, feeding behaviour of the bees was affected. The bees spent longer ingesting the syrup which contained the Cry1Ab which could mean smaller amounts of pollen would be collected. The bees also had impaired learning performance. Honeybees normally do not continue responding to an odour when no food is present, but should be discouraged and seek other sources. The bees continued responding to the odour which again could affect pollen gathering efficiency.  Donovan reports that the study indicated that Bt could indirectly lead to colony death due to failure to collect enough food to sustain the hive.

GOD GAVE EVERY GREEN PLANT FOR FOOD...
We are familiar with green plants. The fortunate among us have seen crops of waving plants, sunflowers for oil; corn, maize and wheat for grains; vegetables and fruits for the table. It is the intrinsic right of every person - made in the image and likeness of God - to be able to freely take care of personal health, and above all, of the little baby being formed in the womb, precious to the Creator God (The Old Testament, Psalm 139, verse 13. 'For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother's womb.')

THE UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS (3)
This wonderful Charter affirms the nobility and dignity of the human being. Enshrined in its enlightened articles is that everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food (Article 25 (1) ). Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance (Article 25 (2). In the light of the considered and quantifiable results of the Canadian team, it would seem prudent and wise to listen to concerns of professionals and take into consideration the results of their findings. The unborn child of today - if cared for properly and nurtured - will bring joy to their parents, be upstanding and contributing citizens for tomorrow, and enjoy health diminishing economic need for medication and treatment.

Article 26 (3) highlights that parents have a prior right to choose the kind of education that shall be given to their children. The sanctity of the human family is thus upheld in the Charter. Each parent teaches their child about wise food choices, and the link between good food and good health. Wise food choices are made only with full knowledge; full knowledge of the source of food is thus interwoven with each person's rights.

With full knowledge, a choice can be made.
With full consent, an informed choice can be made.
God created us in freedom; The Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirms this freedom; let us then continue to uphold each person's intrinsic right to know all that affects his or her ability to make a fully informed and free choice.

This constitutes freedom, and affirms the spirituality behind the food in the fields with which God blessed us.

Holy Mahatma Gandhi and the drop of water

The exquisite cream lace of the tide on the background of the soft cappucino sand under the dusty rose and lilac colours of the setting sun on the waters of Mumbai ocean in India.

The words of the great Mahatma Gandhi;

"We may not be God, but we are of God,
even as a little drop of water is of the ocean."

The Holy Mahatma Gandhi (Mohandras Karamchand Gandhi) spoke about God in his speech delivered in Kingsley Hall,  London in 1931. You can listen to this wonderful speech by clicking on this link;

Shields in Switzerland

As the evening drew on in Switzerland,
and I wandered the winding streets,
I saw this exquisite painting adorning
an outside wall.

The soldier on the left looks, questioning
at the contemplative soldier in the midst.
The contemplative soldier has his red shod left foot
ready to step forward; the right foot, behind, hesitates

as he, deep in thought, ponders the right road to take.
The soldier on the right waits, questioning, and confident
in the leader's judgement, for the decision to be made;
and will follow, faithful and true, into whatever venture it takes him.

And as I wandered onwards in the bracing cool of the gathering evening,
I reflected on this exquisite painting. I do not know
what was in the artist's mind when creating this beauty,
but I do know what this tableau inspired within me.

Sometimes I am the one on the left, questioning
Looking to God for answers.
Sometimes I am the one in the middle,
confidently leading, weighing up the right decision to be made

What will be the outcome? What will the consequences be?
Which is the right road to take? Where are we going?
And at times, I am the one on the right. Trusting in others
to assist me on my road through life.

Even the outside walls in Switzerland glow with beauty, colour and grace.
One thing I did know, as I finished my quiet walk through the streets,
is that God will always guide us
when we question.
God will always assist us
when we lead.
And God will always protect us
when we follow.

We mightn't always get the decision right
We may take decisions that lead to the wisdom that we don't make that specific choice again
We may regret things we have done
and regret things we didn't do

But through it all
Gloriously and strong
God will be there to
Support us when we find the answers to the questions we posed;
God will be there
when we lead in our lives in our families/employment/vocational career
God will be there when
we follow others; sometimes wisely, sometimes not.

The story this lovely painting told me was
that, through it all,
God will always... always, be there.

Thank you to the artist, for blessing with your creation.'

Glorious Switzerland

'Regal in majesty
  Beauteous in architecture
the spire of Switzerland reaches towards heaven.

In ochres and golds
The evening glow as the rooftops
bask in the peace of a cloudlit sky.

Years of history
  Centuries of grace
    Innovator in spirituality

May all in glorious Switzerland be blessed.'

Tulips from Amsterdam

When Auntie Elly used to come and visit our family in Welkom, she and I used to sit at the family piano and sing together. All the girls in our family are singers, and so when we get together for a song it is a joyful occasion. Auntie El and I used to love to sing this lovely tune from Holland; when we came to 'I can't wait until the day you fill these eager arms of mine,' she used to wrap her arms around herself and wink at me, laughing out loudly when Mom used to go 'tsk, tsk.' It was a family tradition. This year I grew my first bulbs, and every time I have gone out into the lovely garden to admire the tulips, I think of Aunty El.

When it's Spring again I'll bring again
Tulips from Amsterdam
With a heart thats true I'll give to you
Tulips from Amsterdam
I can't wait until the day you fill
These eager arms of mine
Like the windmill keeps on turning
That's how my heart keeps on yearning
For the day I know we can share these
Tulips from Amsterdam

When it's Spring again I'll bring again
Tulips from Amsterdam
With a heart thats true I'll give to you
Tulips from Amsterdam
I can't wait until the day you fill
These eager arms of mine
Like the windmill keeps on turning
That's how my heart keeps on yearning
For the day I know we can share these
Tulips from Amsterdam

Blossoms and the poet Ki no Tsurayuki

We are told that about a thousand years ago, the poet Ki no Tsurayuki wrote,

"The poetry of Japan has its roots in the human heart and flourishes in the countless leaves of words. Because human beings possess interests of so many kinds it is in poetry that they give expression to the meditations of their hearts in terms of the sights appearing before their eyes and the sounds coming to their ears. Hearing the warbler sing among the blossoms and the frog in his fresh waters - is there any living being not given to song!"

All you trees

PSALM 148

'Praise the LORD.

Praise the Lord from the heavens,
praise Him in the heights above.
Praise Him, all His angels,
praise Him, all His heavenly hosts.
Praise Him, sun and moon,
Praise Him, all you shining stars,
Praise Him, you highest heavens
and you waters above the skies.
Let them praise the name of the LORD,
for He commnaded and they were
  created.
He set them in place for ever and
  ever;
He gave a decree that will never pass
  away.

Praise the LORD from the earth,
you great sea creatures and all ocean
 depths,
lightning and hail, snow and clouds,
stormy winds that do His bidding,
 you mountains and all hills,
 fruit trees and all cedars,
wild animals and all cattle,
 amall creatures and flying birds,
kings of the earth and all nations,
you princes and all rulers on earth,
young men and maidens,
 old men and children.

Let them praise the name of the LORD,
 for His Name alone is exalted;
His splendour is above the earth and
   the heavens,
He has raised up for His people a
   King,
the praise of all His saints,
of Israel, the people close to His
  heart.

Praise the LORD.'

An Angel in your life

"See that you do not look down on one of these little ones.
For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the Face of My Father in heaven."
The Bible, The New Testament, the Gospel of Matthew, Chapter 18, verse 10.

Jesus Christ tells us in this passage that the guardian angels (spirits) of children are constantly in communication with God as they seek guidance for their earthly charges.

'An Angel in Your life

I have
  an angel in my life
  I once was a child
Now I am a grown up child
    I am mature
     Yet deep inside me, sometimes
       I feel my little child
        When I am scared
When I remember a past hurt
When I dream about a past difficulty
The little child in me comes out
                     Needing reassurance.
God is my reassurance.

You have
   an angel in your life
who finds it difficult to understand
when you are treated with disdain, injustice,
are called names or spoken about with disrespect
           because your angel knows
just how much the Creator in Heaven knows and loves you
as your angel knows and loves you.
God is your Father.

We all have angels
      angels in our lives.
Whether we are an infant, teenager, young adult,
           mature or senior adult,
or in the waiting room of Heaven,
waiting for our call to our eternal destiny.
Let us speak to each other with the respect
that our angels have for us and for each other.
Our angels in our lives see the Heavenly Face of God
   at each moment.
Let us live each moment of our lives
Remembering that - as we were created in the image and likeness
         of God -
We are worthy of that dignity.
May the God of the Angels and our Father
Bless each one of us today
     With love, companionship and understanding

Thank you, Father,
for the Angels in our Lives.'

The Serenity of the Buddha

This beautifully carved sculpture sits, eternally gracious and serene.  Who carved this beautiful image? Whose talented hands spent patient hours perfecting each wondrous fold in the robe, the detail in the hair and the fold falling gracefully over the left shoulder? What thoughts went through the sculptor's mind as the face of the Buddha was carved, deep in the enlightenment?

I do not know. What I do know is, the talent and the quiet elegance of this sculpture left me breathless in the wonderment of the creativity and artistry of the sculptor.

As beautifully and dedicatedly as the sculptor created this image for us to see, so God is patiently at work sculpting our souls.

'I sit on the bedrock lotus of my life
Thinking deeply about many things.
The third eye on my forehead - my conscience, my soul
opens up and reaches towards God, my Creator.

God, please sculpt my soul
With infinite patience help me to accept your wisdom
in arranging the folds of the pattern of my life

Grant me the grace to see that
your ways are not always my ways. That Your Hands raised in blessing
over me are meant to heal, not hurt

Help me to have the courage and strength
to see that I matter enough, am important enough,
to take a few minutes of my busy day

(as worker; employer; employee; mother; father; daughter; son; carer; partner; husband; wife; friend)
- to spend solely at Your Feet
Listening quietly to Your inner Guidance to me

Guide me to allow the gifts of grace, serenity
Acceptance, patience, love, fortitude, wisdom
and gentleness  to grow within me

As the Buddha came to enlightenment
Let me, too, come to enlightenment within You
The God of all Light.

Amen.'
